New connection method between Blue10 – Business Central

In Blue10 it is possible to connect an administration of Business Central to Blue10, to retrieve data from the administration, register header data of invoices and match invoices with the corresponding purchase order and receipt(s). Business Central currently makes use of a username/password authentication method, that systems, such as Blue10, use to establish the connection.

As of April 2022, Business Central will make use of the certificate-based service-to-service (S2S) authentication method and therefore no longer support the username/password authentication method to establish the connection. For more information, we refer you to this blog of Microsoft. The certificate-based S2S authentication method requires a service principal. By entering the Azure Tenant ID, Client ID and Client Secret, it is possible to set up a secure connection between Blue10 and Business Central.

Step-by-step plan to re-establish the connection:

Re-establishing the connection using the new S2S method consists of two parts:

  1. Setting up a service principal in the Microsoft Azure portal
  2. Convert to the new coupling method in Blue10
Part 1: Setting up a service principal in Business Central

First, you need to set up a new access point (service principal)in the Microsoft Azure Portal to be able to make use of the certificate-based S2S authentication method.

Once the service principal is set up, you need the following data from the Microsoft Azure portal to use in Blue10:

    1. Azure Tenant ID: In the Microsoft Azure portal, > open the Azure Active Directory > on the tab Overview you can find the Tenant ID.
    2. Client ID: In the Microsoft Azure portal, > open the Azure Active Directory > go to App registration and copy the Application (client) ID.
    3. Client Password: In the Microsoft Azure portal, > open the Azure Active Directory > go to Certificates & Secrets. Copy the value from the Value field. Note: If you can’t read the full Value, then the Value has already been created at an earlier stage. You can create a new client secret, specifically for Blue10, or check if the full value has been documented elsewhere in the organization.
Part 2: Convert to the new coupling method in Blue10

Follow these steps:

  1. Open Blue10 and go to Settings > Companies and open the relevant company.
  2. Under the heading Login you will currently see Username and Password in the field next to Login type. Choose Connect with Oauth via the dropdown menu and enter the following fields with the data you have noted down during the second step of part 1:
    1. Azure Tenant ID: Enter the value from the Tenant ID field from the Microsoft Azure portal.
    2. Client ID: Enter the value from the Application (client) ID field from the Microsoft Azure portal.
    3. Client Password: Enter the value from the Value field from the Microsoft Azure portal.
  3. Click Save. The connection between Blue10 and Business Central has been re-established.
